For 6 years, bandleader and Jazz Mafia collective founder Adam Theis presented the complete Birth of the Cool album, performed live on Miles Davis' birthday each year with an acoustic 9 piece band, very similar to the original. This led to Theis wanting to do something updated, fresh and new with the material from that classic 1950s album. In January of 2017, Jazz Mafia's "Rebirth of the Cool" was presented in 2 sold-out shows at SFJAZZ and contained many heavily re-envisioned versions of the classic material from those original sessions. The music strikes a precarious balance between the old and new - at times making the music sound as if it were conceived and performed in the ragtime of the early 1900s and at others, in a futuristic, possibly 2020s Jazz setting. Soul Jazz, 70s Fusion, Hip-Hop, Afro-Cuban and Gypsy Jazz are also interwoven into the lens of this new perspective. Players in this 6-piece ensemble switch between styles, tempos, feels, genre and even instruments at dizzying speeds, creating a truly unique modern Jazz performance and tribute to a true masterpiece.
